In 1971, Fisher-Price introduced the #980 ATV Explorer, a white ride-on vehicle that was sold with two round body figures that are similar, yet larger than, the Original Little People figures. One of the figures has a white body, a moustache, and a yellow hardhat, as shown in the photo to the left. The other figure has a yellow body and a white hard hat. From 1971 until 1974 this yellow body figure was light yellow and had a "closed mouth" smile (one line smile). From 1974 until the end of it's production in 1982, the yellow body figure was dark yellow with an "open mouth" smile (two line smile).
In 1975, Fisher-Price introduced 3 new toys in their newly-introduced "Construction Trucks" series: #300 Scoop Loader, #301 Shovel Digger and #302 Dump Truck. These vehicles are large yellow-and- orange, all-plastic trucks that roll on wide track, deep tread tires. Each of these sets came with one all-plastic figure with a round body and a hardhat...except for the #301 Shovel Digger, which came with two of these figures. These figures are 3 inches tall and are the same type of figures used in the #980 ATV Explorer. 1976 introduced a new vehicle, the #311 Bulldozer and 1977 introduced yet another new vehicle to the series, the #313 Roller Grader.
In 1978 all five of the Construction Trucks vehicles mentioned above were integrated into the Husky Helper Series along with 4 new Husky Helper sets: #314 Boom Crane, #315 Cement Mixer, #316 Tow Truck, and #317 Construction Crew. The original 5 vehicles were only modified to accomodate the new Husky Helper figures; all other features, specifications, and appearances were identical to the Construction Truck vehicles. The vehicle seats were round from 1975 to 1977 for the round Construction figures, but the seats were rectangular from 1978 onward for the bigger Husky Helper figures. Click here for a list of the Husky Helper figures.
The only set that still used the round pre-Husky Construction-type figures after 1978 was the #980 ATV Explorer. The ATV Explorer was replaced in 1983 with the #983 Fisher-Price School Bus. The bus was just a modified version of the ATV Explorer, and it was sold with one round blue body figure wearing a blue cap. The #983 was only made for two years, and the round body Pre-Husky figures have not been used in any other sets again.
