Description: Though Fisher-Price made lots and lots of different train engines over the year, the #617 Whistling Engine is very distinctive with special exclusive movement all of it's own. When pulled, the engine's boiler pumps in and out making a whistling noise. The train was originally introduced with a teddy bear engineer in the cab. The last two years it was made, the engine was colored different and had no engineer in the cab.
Accessories:
  • 1957-1957 - FPT8307 - Wooden train engine with a square wooden cab on the back and a round fibre boiler on the front. The cab has BLUE paper lithographs on the sides and edges and a picture of a teddy bear in the side windows. The cab has a wooden roof with a yellow paper lithograph on top marked "Whistling Engine" in red. The boiler has a round metal plate on the front, a red wooden smoke stack on top, and blue paper lithographs wrapped around the sides with 2 yellow lines and pictures of steam. The engine rolls on 4 yellow wooden wheels. The back two wheels have black rubber on the edges for traction and off-centered metal piston rods attached. The piston rods are attached to the front wheels. When pulled, the piston rods pull the the boiler toward the cab making a whistling noise. Measures 7-1/2" long, 4-1/4" high, and 4" wide. *See Variations below.
Variations:
  • 1958-1959 - FPT8310 - Wooden train engine with a square wooden cab on the back and a round fibre boiler on the front. The cab has WHITE paper lithographs on the sides and edges with a blue window on the sides and red wooden roof on top. The boiler has a round metal plate on the front, a black wooden smoke stack on top, and paper lithographs wrapped around the sides with black, white, red, and blue zig-zag lines. The engine rolls on 4 yellow wooden wheels. The back two wheels have black rubber on the edges for traction and off-centered metal piston rods attached. The piston rods are attached to the front wheels. When pulled, the piston rods pull the the boiler toward the cab making a whistling noise. Measures 7-1/2" long, 4-1/4" high, and 4" wide.
